Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has received 260 books from the Krishna Uppal Educational Fund. The donations worth KSh. 300, 000 will benefit students pursuing mathematics, chemistry, physics and statistics at the College of Pure and Applied Sciences (COPAS).
Prof. Surindar. M. Uppal who presented the books said the Fund was keen to partner with JKUAT in supporting training and research in the country by tapping the potential of excellent students; particularly the girl child.
Besides the book donation, Prof. Uppal said, beginning January, 2019, the Fund will also extend financial assistance to excelling students within COPAS before later extending the scheme to students from other faculties.
While receiving the donation, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi commended the Fund for the initiative that she said would significantly impact the lives of learners.
The Vice Chancellor added that the bursary scheme by the Fund will be a huge complement to similar schemes the University is currently running such as the Vice Chancellor’s Award and the Babaroa Award.
The donation ceremony was witnessed by Dean, School of Mathematical Sciences, Prof. George Orwa; Dean School of Biological Sciences, Dr. Shadrack Muya; Director Linkages Dr. Kaibui Mwikamba, among others.
The Krishna Uppal Education Fund was founded in the memory and honour of Mrs. Krishna Uppal the late wife to Prof. S. M. Uppal, who is a senior professor in the School of Mathematical Sciences. Krishna had a soft spot for girls’ education and spent her life promoting the cause.
