Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture professor has been re-appointed as a commissioner of the Commission for University Education (CUE) for a period of three years, with effect from August 7, 2020.
In the Kenya Gazette dated, August 7, 2020, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Prof. George Magoha appointed Prof. Anne Muigai to join three other members in the commission namely; Dr. Elizabeth Muli, Eng. David Onyango and Ms. Lucy Kambuni.
Prof. Muigai, a Professor of Genetics in the JKUAT Botany Department, is a molecular population geneticist with over 19 years’ experience. She holds a doctorate degree in Population Genetics and Molecular Biology from JKUAT.
Prof. Muigai has published over 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals. She has published articles on prehistoric fight between hunters and gatherers dated 1,000 years ago in Lake Turkana. One of the papers, titled Inter-group violence among early Holocene hunter-gatherers of West Turkana, Kenya was published in the prestigious journal – Nature.
On top of all these, the professor is a member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) advisory committee on developing global standards for governance and oversight of human genome editing. She is also a Taxonomy Group Member of the African Union, advising on issues relating to genetic resources of indigenous animals.
Prof. Muigai was the founder chairperson of the JKUAT Department of Botany, has served as the Chief Judge for Young Scientists Kenya, and a Director with the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services, among other responsibilities.
