A new probiotic yoghurt that is designed to provide essential nutrients and boost immunity among children has been launched. Maya Probiotic Yoghurt that comes in 250 ml and 100 ml with vanilla, strawberry and pineapple flavours becomes the latest to retail in supermarkets and other retail stores across the country
Maya which is a product of academia-industry partnership between JKUAT Enterprises and Tropical Brands Africa Limited, has reduced sugar levels and is recommended for lactose intolerant consumers.
Speaking during the launch, Thursday October 13, 2016 at JKUAT, Tropical Brands Africa Limited Chairman, Linus Gitahi said it was time Kenya produced more research driven products that addresses comprehensive value chains like Maya yoghurt.
Gitahi whose company will brand, distribute and market the yoghurt added that local manufacturing is critical to the country’s socio-economic progress. He hailed JKUAT for its entrepreneurial and research capacity and for coming up with products that address actual societal needs.
JKUAT Council Chairman, Prof. Paul Kanyari welcomed the launch of the product, terming it an exemplary offshoot of industry-academia collaboration.
He reported that JKUATES which is the commercial subsidiary of JKUAT, was also developing tissue culture products to address food security in Kenya.
Prof. Romanus Odhiambo who represented the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mabel Imbuga at the launch said JKUAT had rolled out a number of products designed to address the country’s needs.
In the field of ICT, for example, Prof. Odhiambo singled out the Taifa Laptop, conceived, designed and assembled by the University that is currently retailing in Kenya.
While rooting for the ‘buy Kenya, build Kenya’ concept, Prof. Odhiambo commended Tropical Brands Africa Limited for the partnership and said the University remains committed to see its fruitful implementation.
