ITROMID was established in December 2001 with the mandate to carry out training and research in Health Sciences that would provide solutions for national development in Kenya. The Institute will provide training in all aspects of tropical medicine and infectious diseases that urgently require man power resources at high level for solving health problems in Kenya, the African continent, and globally.
It will develop unique programs that will train students to be sensitive to the local environment in which they will find themselves. The students will be challenged to be mission-oriented, and to develop originality in thinking to provide practical solutions to health and health-related issues. Every programme is designed with this practical approach while still maintaining the scientific and intellectual character.
ITROMID being an institute of JKUAT is open to all without discrimination against race, creed, colour or gender. The Institute was also established in order to attain further development of collaboration between the University and Research Institutions such as Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).
The collaboration represents a successful example on resources harnessing between two government institutions to foster development. ITROMID is the coordinating center for all departments engaged in HIV/AIDS activities (AIDS Control Unit, Dean of Students’ office and university Hospital).
