While JKUAT is a University of excellence in ICT education, training and research it also utilizes ICT to facilitate the effective and efficient delivery of higher education services locally and internationally. It is for this reason that JKUAT established and has been continually improving ICT services for the University community leading to the establishment of a fully-fledged ICT Directorate.
The ICT Directorate is under the Office of the Vice Chancellor. The ICT Director is a member of the University Management Board denoting the strategic importance of ICT in the University. The ICT Director is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Education Network Trust; the internet service agent for higher education institutions in Kenya.
The Directorate Information Communication Technology (ICT) works closely with all the other departments in the University. it provides services to university staff and students. It is divided into three sections: Information Systems (IS) section, Infrastructure Support Services (ISS) section and Research, Consultancy and Training (RCT) section. Activities of the three sections are harmonized to achieve the objectives of the directorate.
JKUAT’s ICT Director leads and facilitates technology programs in support of the teaching and research mission of the University, with focus on academic, administrative and infrastructure technologies. Working with ICT professionals in the University, the ICT Director encourages technical innovation and the development of a robust and dependable technology infrastructure.
Activities of the Directorate
• Installation of system software, application programs, antivirus programs and hardware
• Maintenance of computers and related accessories in the University
• Checking and testing new computers and related accessories for conformity to required standards
• End user support
• Enforcement of ICT policy in the University
• Design and implementation of information systems in the University
• Research, consultancy and training of new technologies to end users and the general public.
• Provision of ICT infrastructure services e.g. networking to the university
• Controlling the use of internet services within the University
• Sage ACCPAC ERP financial and operations system implementation
