Cloud developer bootcamp hosted in Jkuat 29 – 30 June, courtesy of iCEOD and IBM. Day 1 (29 june) was the ladies day, focused on women leadership in technology .In attendance were Jkuat women leaders, IBM women leaders and other industry leaders.
Based on how technology is fast changing, they were given advised on embracing ingenuity to problem solving to which would greatly impact positively based on their fields of interests. They were enlightened on how to make use of IBM cloud platform (bluemix) to come up with concrete and relevant solutions to perennial and long term problems affecting their different social and economic ventures. Impact of mobile technology was another core of the talk, preference of mobile technology was of a big concern which lead to wider discussion of the related aspects like mobile analytics, mobile cloud computing and mobile application development and security.A comprehensive hand on lab was also part of the days’ event.
Day two of the event (30 june) was attended by all developers with a major focus on the following areas with regards to bluemix – (IBM’s cloud platform)
- mobile technology
- internet of things
- big data analytics
- hybrid mobile application development.
The above mentioned were covered in depth by officials from IBM. everyone was involved in coming up with a demonstration of how the previously listed concepts apply in bluemix. issues such as security and data management was also pointed out.
Jkuat vice chancellor who attended the event said that such event projected hugely in regards to Kenya’s vision 2030 ,which is only achievable through exploitation of science, technology and innovation and knowledge transfer, promotion of private sector development and protection of property rights requires a system that can facilitate maximum utilization of research, innovation, knowledge transfer and commercialization.
She continued by adding that technologies such as business analytics, information management & big data, mobile computing, and cloud computing are very essential at the moment and as a result Jkuat was doing everything to equip its staff, students and the public with relevant skills that makes them easily and readily absorbed into the job market.
The director of iCEOD Prof, Muliaro Wafula on his side said Jkuat has moved further and established the ICT Centre of Excellence and Open data –iCEOD, through this centre, Jkuat is set to work with partners to attain the highest level of technology transfer, innovation, research in areas related to open and big data.
He highlighted that iCEOD, few years down the line is going to be so pivotal in information sharing thanks to its cloud-based Open data Centre, currently under establishment. The Centre also promotes data sharing, analysis, management and archival.This effort envision to explore and innovate ways that can unlock latent value of open and big data, stimulate innovation and increase transparency and accountability especially in public domain, he said.
He finalized by saying that everyone will be able to access dynamic reusable /sharable and high quality data based on different areas of interest such as agriculture ,health, transport and tourism, education et cetera. He welcomed all to join hands to help iCEOD see into its mission –"To emerge as the premier research and development centre for technology transfer and open data for economic and human advancement." and mission.
