Core Units

The Department offers a 4 year curriculum to Bachelor pf Science students studying Zoology. To gain entry in this program, students must attain  the minimum University entry requirements and must also have at least B- in Biology or Biological Sciences in their secondary school exams.

In the first and second years of study, students take general zoology and in the third and fourth years of study, they  may study zoology as a major option or pursue other options like Biomedical, Genomics,  Ecology or Entomology as degree programmes etc. (3:3:1:1) or (3:3:2:2) or (3:3:3:2:1).  Self sponsored undergraduate students may study in the Department of Zoology in the Alternative Degree Programme (ADP).

CORE UNITS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY

FIRST YEAR OF STUDY

All first year students study 5 (five) Zoology units.  In addition, they also study 4 (four) Botany units, 4 (four) Chemistry units, 3 (three) University units and 1 (one) Faculty of Science unit.

SZL 2102: Animal Physiology

SECOND YEAR OF STUDY – (ZOOLOGY UNITS)

SZL 2200: Vertebrate Zoology
SZL 2204: Environmental Biology & Conservation
SZL 2201: Arthropod biology
SZL 2203: Fundamentals of Molecular Biology

THIRD YEAR OF STUDY

In the third year of study, Zoology major students may join any one the five zoology options of their choice. The options  include Zoology regular, Biomedical, Genomics, Entomology and Ecology
