Statistics is a discipline that is fundamental in  decision making  and policy formulation. The program forcuses on  statistical science and its  application to  real problems. Statistical  techniques and methodologies including collecting, comparison  and designing of experiments, analysis of data handled. Graduates may apply the knowledge gained in production industry, Financial ,medical and agriculture.Statistical parkages are used   to reinforce students theretical and practicazl skills.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The program of B.Sc. Statistics is intended to provide students with strong grounding in Biostatistical skills in order to fill the demonstrated need and demand for well-trained biostatisticians. This is based on sound training in modern Biostatistical methodology needed to design and analyze biomedical, epidemiological and agricultural research data. The Biostatistics programme includes a base of theoretical work complemented by practical analysis of real data. This prepares technically proficient biostatisticians to assist investigators with the design and analysis of their research data. In addition, it prepares its graduate for real-life data analysis and statistical inference thereby enabling them to draw appropriate conclusions from biomedical and other data types.

Entry Requirements:
1.1(a) KCSE with mean aggregate of C+ in both Mathematics and English.
1.2 Acredit pass inthe JKUAT bridging certificate may replace KSCE mathematics.
1.3 Have a minimum of 2 principal passes in Science subjects, one of which should be Mathematics, in General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level/ Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE).
or
1.4 Have aminimum of principal passes in Science  subjects , one of which should be Mathematics in General certificate of education (GCE) Advanced Level/Kenya Certificate of Education (KACE)
1.5 Have  a diploma in Mathematics or Statistics and with at least a credit  pass from an institution recognized by the University Senate.
1.6 Have A diploma in Applied sciences, in which there has been a substantial mathematics conted  with at least credit pass in relevant subjects from an institution recognized by the University Senate.
1.7 Have A diploma in Applied sciences, in which there has been a substantial mathematics conted  with at least credit pass in relevant subjects from an institution recognized by the University Senate.
Students who hold any of the qualifications 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4 above may at the discretion of the Faculty of Science be admitted directly to the second year of the course in which case they may complete their course in a minimum of three academic years.
Students who hold the qualification 1.5 above may at the discretion of the Faculty of Science be admitted directly to the third year of the course in which case they may complete their courses in a minimum of two academic years and a maximum of four academic years.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE AND REGULATIONS

Duration: The program takes a total of eight semesters with two semesters planned per academic year.

Courses: There are six required course units in every semester. In the first academic year, each student is required to take three (3) university and one (1) faculty units. In the fourth academic year each student takes one university unit and one additional elective unit. Each student shall be required to undertake practical attachment for a period of not less than 8 weeks at the end of the 8th semester.

Additional units are also available on consultation during the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years. (these do not count towards the classification of the degree but will appear on the transcripts).

One unit is defined as a series of 35 one lecture hours with a three-hour practical period and a two hour tutorial period being equivalent to a three-hour lecture.

Mode of Study: This is a full time program at JKUAT and is conducted during normal semester time.

Regulations: All JKUAT University Regulations and the regulations of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biostatistics apply.

Examinations: Examinations are taken at the end of every semester for the courses taken that semester. The University and Faculty of Science Examinations rules and regulations for the degree programmes apply.
