The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences focuses on production of leaders in training, research and innovation in the field of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Technology, other applied sciences and health-related enterprise development to support the JKUAT mission and to suit the needs of a dynamic world.
The BSc. Medical Laboratory Sciences is a professional course under the umbrella of the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB). KMLTTB was established by an Act of Parliament to regulate Medical Laboratory Sciences training and practice in Kenya.
The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) BSc. Medical Laboratory Sciences curriculum was developed in consultation with the KMLTTB guidelines specifying the minimum content of curricular for Bachelors programmes.
The developed curriculum also took into consideration the comments and concerns of other stakeholders including current students and alumni as well as opinions from laboratory personnel from Kenyatta National Hospital and potential consumers of the programme.
Advances have been made in the field of Medicine and particularly in Medical Laboratory Sciences.
Modern technological innovations have enabled improved understanding of body functions and aetiological agents of disease leading to better diagnosis of disease and management of patients.
Medical Laboratory Scientists in Kenya and the East African region need to be equipped with current methods of disease diagnosis. The degree course in Medical Laboratory Sciences offered by JKUAT will provide the necessary skills for the diagnosis and management of disease in the modern era.
