Top three projects for the year 2011
1. TITLE: Glass Reinforced Plastic Tanks as an Alternative to Galvanized Hot Water Tanks
OWNERS: Nzove S. Nduku and Kilimo Chemeito Moses
ABSTRACT
Over the years, solar heater storage tanks have been made of galvanized steel. The design and fabrication of the solar heater storage tanks from galvanized steel has shown to be totally within the present state-of-art but long term durability of the tank is questionable.
The corrosion of domestic hot water tanks involves destruction by electrochemical action of galvanized steel in presence of water.
Although the galvanized layer prevents corrosion of the underlying steel layer, the tanks are still corroded. Depending on the sunshine intensity, the temperatures of the water in the tank fluctuate and can go as high as 600C. Since corrosion is directly proportional to temperature, therefore, at this elevated temperature, the tank corrodes.
This project was undertaken to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of design and fabrication of a solar heater water storage tank using Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) as an alternative structural components.
2. TITLE: Design and Fabrication of A Simple Vacuum Preservation System for Domestic Application
OWNERS: Meshack Hawi and Bernard Otieno Owiti
ABSTRACT
Kenya is an agricultural country. Most of the produce gets spoiled quickly due to lack of proper food/produce preservation facility that can easily and conveniently be accessed by the farmers, traders or consumers. The existing methods of food preservation are either expensive or have certain limitations. These limitations and cost limit the use of these preservation methods.
The methods of food preservation that has been used and still in use range from traditional e.g. smoking, drying, salting and heating to modern methods like pasteurization and refrigeration. Refrigeration which is the most commonly used has certain weaknesses such as prohibitive cost of the equipment and continuous reliance on power for operation. It also causes freezer burn in some food types.
The project involved the design and fabrication of a vacuum preservation machine to address the limitations of the existing and commonly used food preservation methods. The vacuum preservation machine is designed to extract air from a bag or a container in which the product to
be preserved is placed and then sealed to make it air-tight so that an oxygen free environment is created around the product. A vacuum pump is used to extract air from the confined space and then an electric heat sealer used to seal the bags carrying the product.
The machine can be used in the preservation of agricultural products such as cereals and vegetables. Other areas of application include preservation of perishable products such as fish, meat and biological specimens. The vacuum preservation machine can also be used to protect electronic components that are sensitive to oxygen i.e. that corrode in presence of oxygen and moisture.
3. TITLE: Conversion of Electrostatic Precipitator Filter to a Combined Jet Pulse and Electrostatic Precipitator Filter
OWNERS: Auka V. Maureen and Kariuki Samuel Ndegwa
ABSTRACT
Particulate matter is the primary pollutant emitted from the manufacture of Portland cement. Because of the raw materials used, almost every operation in the cement plant has the potential to produce dust. Exhaust from the kilns is the largest source of particulate emission in cement plant. The second and third largest sources are the clinker cooler and the raw mills respectively.
Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) have been used to reduce particulate emissions from cement kilns, coolers and mills in cement plants. In recent years, several developments have been made as well as significant progress in filtration media such as bag collector, which is a viable alternative to ESPs.
In order to achieve the optimum solution for dust filtration efficiency, Bamburi Portland Cement Company does not have to remove the existing ESPs. However, it is proposed that the invented hybrid technique to be used hand in hand with the existing one. That will enable them to evaluate the performance of both techniques. The new combined filters are fitted with ESP and tetrex filter bag technology and are capable of removing 10t/day of dust from the raw mills. This ensures that the product from the overflow of the raw mills circuit cyclone is removed and that dust emissions from the filter systems are kept well below 30mg/m3 level. Additionally, the filter and the ductwork are covered to avoid condensation.
This system of filtration can in future be installed on site to have a complete walkway, access platforms, fans, and ductwork and dust removal screw conveying systems.
The main advantages of this project are:
* There is greater reduction in overall electric cost necessary to run the filter.
* Increased efficiency of dust filtration.
* The filter system provides high dust holding capacity in conjunction with a slow rise in pressure drop –thus long life times.
* There is minimal risk of explosions i.e. carbon monoxide can be present in the exhaust gases without a risk of explosions unlike in the case of ESPs alone.
* Pulse-jet baghouse have the capability of online maintenance.
* Stricter emission regulations (by the government and Portland cement Company) through all operating conditions which leads to lower emissions.
* Advancement in filter media increases a bag life which ensures lower operating cost.
The project was based on the theme Vision 2030 and National Industrialization Policy Chapter 2:16 For Cleaner Production and Environmental conservation.
This project involved development of a Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) programs. With the 1st policy statement on cleaner production and environmental conservation being to promote investment in local manufacturing of resource efficient and cleaner production equipment along with other emerging technologies.
