Steam generation using waste oil from Transport Department of JKUAT

Some innovative projects are carried out by final year students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. These involve design and fabrication using locally available materials, heat and power generation systems such as steam boiler. An example is the steam boiler utilizing waste oil burner. Waste oil is continuously produced in the Transport Department of the university in which the fleet vehicles undergo removal of used oil as part of maintenance. Two undergraduate students, Muriithi and Gakuo were able to design and fabricate a steam generation boiler. Through this they were able to demonstrate that it is possible to not only generate steam for various applications but also generate power for various electrical uses within the university.
