Through the JICA/JKUAT BRIGHT Project on rural electrification using renewable energy which started in 2012; members of mechanical engineering department have greatly benefited by undertaking research projects under the leadership of Jkuat and Japanese Professors.
Several members of staff have received specialized training in Japan; and these include Mr. Richard Njihia, the late Mr. Bernard Kosgey and Ms. Doreen Irungu. The areas of research that they have been trained on include;
• Surface modification of the pelton turbine by thermal spraying.
• Investment casting.
• Design and Fabrication of wind turbine blades.
• Performance characterization of the horizontal axis rotor blades.
• Performance characterization of the induction generator.
• Performance characterization of the undershot hydro turbine.
• Performance characterization of the reversed pump hydro turbine.
