The marine students who recently trained at the National Youth Service (NYS) were awarded with certificates for First Aid on 15th June 2012. The certificate confirms their competence in assisting victims requiring first aid attention in a given situation. The certificate award ceremony was presided over by Mr. Patrick Muchai who was their training commander at the NYS and Prof. B.W. Ikua, the Dean, School of Mechanical, Manufacturing and Materials Engineering. Other witnesses to the event were the staff of Mechanical Engineering Department led by Dr. H. Ndiritu (Chairman of the Department), Prof. S. M. Maranga and Mr. Dio.
The event was preceded by an organized march from the Nyayo Park to the certificate award venue at the graduation pavilion. The procession caught other members of the university community unawares as the students demonstrated that they still retain the leadership, command and control skills that they leant at the NYS.
The university management has recognized the role such trained students can play in its activities. Recently the students were incorporated by the university graduation organizing committee in which they provided first aid skills, crowd control, and security, among others. This makes the students play a key role in university events as they have a chance of applying the skills gained from the training.
