Marine Engineering at JKUAT

The first two years will be devoted to equipping the students with a strong scientific basis in engineering principles. Thereafter, they will gradually be introduced to marine related professional courses. In the fourth year candidates can opt for naval architecture or marine systems engineering. There will be one internal attachment during which the students will learn some regimental and survival skills. This will be followed by attachment to a marine related industry before finally going off to sea in a ship for a designated period of time. All practical attachment sessions will be formally supervised and will fulfill the requirements for the award of the engineering degree, while also meeting the minimum requirements for the certification as an officer of the watch upon graduation.
At the end of the five (5) year programme, the graduate will be able to:
(i)      design and construct ship hulls;
(ii)    select and design various machinery and systems in the shipping industry and;
(iii) operate and maintain machinery and systems in the shipping industry and;
(iv) design and use other shipping related structures on- and off-shore and;
(v)    Work in management positions in government and maritime industry.
The programme is designed to meet the minimum requirements for accreditation by Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA). Additionally, the course content and the structure take into consideration the requirements of the Engineers Registration Board of Kenya (ERB). The curriculum takes cognizance of the needs of the immediate hinterland of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa.

Minimum entry requirement:

The following are the Requirements for admission into the degree programme:

KCSE Mean grade B- (minus) and mean grade for the total score in the four JAB cluster subjects of at least B (plain) and the following minimum grades in the individual luster subjects: Mathematics C+, Physics C+, Chemistry C+, Geography or Biology, or 2nd group III, or any group IV.
