Message From the Chairman

We have come a long way since the humble beginnings of the JKUAT IT Department as JKUAT-MMS IT Centre 1996. In fact a student who took his diploma in 1997 would not recognize the place! It has grown so much. It is our pride and joy that even as we celebrate the growth of a center to a fully fledged university department that has been nothing short of phenomenal, we can expect further expansion in terms of academic programs.

We are in the process of adding value to the programs offered in the center by not only improving existing courses, but also introducing new programs in a direct response to the current needs of the Kenyan and international market.

As the telecommunications age touches the lives of the vast majority of Kenyans, JKUAT IT Department is not being left behind. With the introduction of courses dealing with GSM technology, 3D computer animation and others, we want to hold true to our drive to bridge the gap between theory and practice and between training and work.

In this task we are happy to acknowledge the efforts of the hardworking staff at the department and the university management, whose efforts have indeed spoken for themselves.

OUR TRAINING APPROACH
The courses emphasize an approach through which the lecturer and students focus on the applications of the skills being learned rather than only the theory behind them. Students are given hands-on experience and learn how to apply their knowledge in a real working environment. Thus success in these units means that the student must really be able to do the tasks required. We are certain that employers have been quick to recognize the value of this competency-based approach.
