Leave / Types of Leave

Currently Annual leave for non academic staff, support staff, shall be earned at the rate of 28 working days:

Leave year shall be from 1st January to 31st December.

Types of Leave

Compassionate Leave
An employee desiring to take leave on compassionate grounds shall with prior arrangement with the Head of Department and approval of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (APD) be granted upto a maximum of seven (7) working days in case of emergencies/dire needs relating to a member of nuclear family.
Such leave shall be taken during the emergency /dire need and not after.

Maternity Leave
(a)Female members of staff shall be granted maternity leave with full salary for a period of ninety (90) calendar days
(b)Female members of staff who are granted maternity leave will not forfeit their annual leave in the year in which maternity leave is taken.

Paternity Leave
Male employees shall be entitled to ten (10) working days paternity leave with full pay during maternity confinement of their legal spouse. In this regard, it is clarified that in case of a male employee with more than one wife, he will be entitled to paternity leave only in respect of the wife registered with National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) contributors card held by the employer and such leave shall be taken not more than once a year.

Sick Leave
A member of staff who is prevented by illness from carrying out duties shall be required to furnish a medical certificate by a qualified Medical practitioner to this effect within two consecutive days of absence. However, if it is not possible for an employee to furnish a medical certificate within two days, he/she shall be expected to explain his/her reasons for not doing so.
Provided that a qualified medical practitioner is satisfied that there is a reasonable prospect of eventual recovery and fitness for duty, a member of staff shall be granted such leave subject to the following maximum:

On Full Pay
Above five (5) years of Service – Six (6) months
Below five (5) years of Service – Three (3) months
Contract Staff – Two (2) months

On Half Pay
Above five (5) years of Service – Six (6) months
Below five (5) years of Service – Three (3) months
Contract Staff – Two (2) months

On expiry of the maximum days provided above, the employer will appoint a Medical Board to examine the employee and after considering the Medical Boards’ report have the right to terminate the services of the employee on medical grounds

Study Leave
The employer shall follow the laid down procedure for processing study leaves requests by employees bearing in mind the needs of the University and shall pay the employee his/her full basic salary when on study leave.

Special Leave
The Employer may at his/her discretion, grant special leave for any purpose not covered by the categories of leave set out in this document. In granting such leave, the Employer shall take into account the frequency of such absences on a member’s University work.

Unpaid Leave
On request of the employee, the employer may grant unpaid leave on special circumstances for a maximum period of two (2) years
