I take this opportunity to introduce you to the Department of Horticulture and Food Security in the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. The vision of this Department is to be “A world class department of excellence for development in Horticulture and Food Security”. Considering that Agriculture is the backbone of Kenya’s economy, the Department’s academic programs are aligned to the national development agenda and by extension, to the global Sustainable Development Goal 2 that seeks sustainable solutions to end hunger in all its forms by 2030 and to achieve food security. The Department offers undergraduate degree programs in Agriculture and Horticulture, and Postgraduate degree programs (masters and doctorate) in Horticulture, Plant Breeding, Plant Health, Science and Management and Research Methodology (masters only). Respective program units are taught and facilitated by highly qualified academic and technical staff that are stationed in the labs and field. Among the academic staff, 86% are PhD holders, while a good number of the technical staff hold undergraduate degrees in relevant fields. The prowess of the academic and technical staff in teaching and practicals is continually upgraded through research, conferences, workshops, and short stay programs in other institutions either locally, regionally or internationally. The department has well equipped laboratories, a farm with access to clean water, screen houses, polytunnels and a certified fruit nursery where propagation of seedlings is undertaken. The Department also offers outreach services, soil and plant analysis, short-courses and other capacity building tools to farmers and other stakeholders.
