The department through the French Embassy is developing an exchange progromme that will enable exchange of students and staff between JKUAT and the institutions under the umbrella of Agreenium. The collaboration will enable mobility of students between the two institutions. The DVC AA facilitate the collaboration. JKUAT students will benefit from established programmmes in French especially in viticulture. The french deputy ambassador graced the occasion. as a starting point, the Department will offer internship to French students starting from May 2018..
All departmental students and staff met at the Assembly hall to discuss issue affecting the department. the Dean and associated Dean of the faculty attended the occasion that started from 11.00am to 13hrs. Issues touching students life and discipline in the university were discuss and avenues of supporting and improving students university life were also discussed.
JKUAT is participating in the Fifth African Education Week at a Cape Town Hotel organized by the RUFORUM as the 5th Biennal conference from the 17th – 21st of October 2016. The conference theme is “Linking Agricultural Universities with Civil society, the Private Sector, Governments and other stakeholders in support of Agricultural Development in Africa’. Lincoln University in Missouri in conjunction with the Faculty of Agriculture JKUAT and the REALIPM co. Ltd. organized a farmers open day on Friday july 1st 2016 at the REALIPM company premises. Lead farmers and extension agents were trained on various aspects of biological disease and insect pest management. The field day, sponsored by a USDA Foreign Agriculture Service (FAS), Scientific Cooperation Research Program (SCRP) funded project, has attracted more than 25 growers and county extension educators as well as 15 students and interns. A team of staff from the Department of Horticulture is on a retreat at Maanzoni Lodge undertaking curriculum review of horticulture programmes. The team is led by Dr. Fredah Wanzala, the Chairperson of the Department. The retreat which runs from Tuesday 16th January to Saturday 30th 2016 is sponsored by the Netherlands government under the Netherlands Capacity building in Higher Education (NICHE) programme. The review seeks to integrate labour market needs and gender sensitivity into the curriculum. the department of horticulture participates in the Retreat organized by Africa-ai-Japan to chat way forward in the project implementation and ways of ensuring that JKUAT is ranked top. Dr. Lucy Kananu, a senior lecturer in the department of Horticulture won a competitive grant of a bout USD 60,000 from the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM). out of 108 applicants 29 were selected and funded. The Competitive Grants Scheme (CGS) with Graduate Research Grants (GRG) being one of the key granting mechanism for supporting university-led research linked to addressing needs of smallholder farmers along agricultural value chains.
