It is one of the clinical departments in the School of Medicine. It is involved in teaching Year 4 MBChB students as well as Clinical Medicine students, both at Diploma and Degree levels. This is particularly when they take Child Health and Paediatrics Units. The department provides Paediatric Services to Mama Lucy Kibaki, Gatundu and Thika Level V hospitals which are the teaching hospitals for the Medical School.

To be a centre of excellence in child health and paediatric training
To engage in child health and paediatrics training informed by evidence based clinical care as a result of locally and internationally recognized clinical research in order to suit the demands of a dynamic world.
The department of Child Health and Paediatrics is headed by a Chair, appointed from among the members by the Vice-Chancellor as per university statutes. The founding and current chair of department is Dr. Patrick Mburugu.
