The Department of Biomechanical and Environmental Engineering (formerly Agricultural Engineering) is one of the oldest in the University. It dates back to the inception of the University, then Jomo Kenyatta College of Agriculture and Technology, in 1981. The first batch of students graduated with a certificate in Agricultural Engineering in 1984. Since then, the Department has continued to improve its programmes in trend with market demands.

As it is the vision of the University to become a world class institution in science, technology and innovation, the department has continued to produce leaders in the fields of agriculture and engineering. Currently, the department has over 300 students and offers the following programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate level:

  • Agricultural Engineering
  • Soil,Water and Environmental Engineering
  • Biomechanical and Processing Engineering

Apart from a team of highly qualified teaching and technical staff, the department has fully equipped laboratories, and facilities for research such as a tuition farm, agricultural engineering workshop and computer laboratories.

The department also collaborates with various reknown local and international institutions to undertake joint research projects and capacity building programmes. Currently, the department is involved in various research projects on current issues such as climate change, food security, protected cultivation, integrated water resources management, sustainable production and energy.
