The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Council led by the Chairman, Amb. Mahboub Maalim, has pledged to keep track of sports development in the University in bid to promote a holistic teaching and learning experience among the students.
To foster this, Amb. Maalim said, the University will closely monitor and support sporting activities at JKUAT to ensure students get the full academic experience while also having a platform to discover and hone their talents.
The Chairman of Council acknowledged the JKUAT football team for their elevation and participation in the Kenya Division Two league, adding, he was impressed by the manner in which the students have managed to strike a delicate balance between sports and academics.
“I have noted that majority of you are pursuing science related courses. I am very impressed because many people say it is unconventional for sports and science to work. We would like to see you go even further and win trophies,” said Amb. Maalim.
Amb. Maalim stated that joblessness is a problem that can be managed by using talent as a tool to channel innovativeness.
He made the sentiments when the Council interacted with the football team on Wednesday, July 21, 2021.
Dr. Salome Gichura, a Council member, underscored the fact that dedication was key for one to succeed in sports.
She urged the students to always uphold sportsmanship while competing outside the University stating that public perception of the University is dependent on how they carry themselves.
On her part, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, was delighted with the team’s performance, adding, she has become accustomed to receiving trophies from various sporting activities.
Prof. Ngumi lauded the students for their commitment in sports and positive progress reports in sporting activities, and congratulated the Director of Sports, Dr. Waweru Kamaku for being at the fore front of JKUAT’s success in sports.
The new developments come hot on the heels of big wins for JKUAT in hand ball where the University was thrust to the limelight for winning successive tournaments at Malindi and Machakos.
Present during the brief function were Council members; Tom Mshindi, Joseph Gitonga and Gabriel Lengoiboni.
