A dozen dons in the field of chemistry drawn from some African universities have converged at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology for a four-day workshop.
The Second Instrumentation Workshop on Gas Chromatography & Mass Spectrometry being held from August 23 to August 26, 2010 is organized by the Pan Africa Chemistry Network (PACN Kenya), which is an initiative sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), Syngenta International and Organization for the Protection from Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
Facilitators for the workshop are: Prof. Anthony Gachanja of JKUAT and Dr. Mathias Schafer of University of Cologne, Germany.
In September, 2009, PACN Kenya held an international conference on Water at the University of Nairobi and today, the network is holding its 2nd instrumentation workshop in JKUAT. In January 2010, a similar workshop was held in University of Addis Ababa and another workshop is planned next year in Ghana. These workshops aim at training chemistry scientists on how to run and interpret spectra generated by the GC-MS instrument. PACN is also supporting this Analytical laboratory of excellence in JKUAT to be used for analysis, training and research within the region.
