Long serving University of Nairobi scholar and Vice Chancellor Prof. Francis John Gichaga started his assignment as the 4th Chancellor of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) at the Coast Province where he toured and inspected teaching facilities at three of JKUAT institutions namely Mombasa Polytechnic University College, a constituent college of JKUAT, JKUAT Mombasa CBD Centre and JKUAT Taita Taveta campus in Voi.
The Chancellor who was accompanied by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mabel Imbuga , Deputy Vice Chancellors Prof. Romanus Odhiambo (Academic Affairs) and Prof. Francis Njeruh (Administration Planning and Development) paid tribute to his predecessor, Prof. Ali Mazrui and underlined the importance of embracing modern corporate governance principles, to enable JKUAT to achieve its strategic objectives. Prof. Gichaga already well versed with the JKUAT Act and Statues encouraged universities to come up with innovative ways of income generating projects to supplement the dwindling government funding. The occasion was also attended by Registrars Dr. Suleman Okech (Academic Affairs), Prof. Isaac Inoti (Administration Planning and Development) and Finance Officer Anthony Wachira. At the Mombasa Polytechnic University College, he was received by the institution’s authorities led by Prof. Josephat Mwatela, the inaugural principal while at the Taita Taveta campus, enthusiastic student and staff community led by the campus principal Prof. Hamadi Boga received the chancellor. The chancellor in a busy schedule is also set to visit other JKUAT institutions with his last visit planned for Wednesday April 14, 2010 at the main campus in Juja.
