THREE YEARS: LOOKING BACK, LOOKING FORWARD
Come September this year-2013, JKUAT Nakuru CBD Campus, will be three years old in the county of Nakuru. I therefore, fully feel obliged to comment on where we have come from and where we are going as a best practice in management. Indeed, as the campus turns three, we must celebrate just as much as will plan for the next couple of years, since all successful organizations have a time of reflection and planning. As the leading campus, we need to dig into our archives and call on a wide range of our customers to tell us their experience that illuminate the past, and ones that cast a long shadow on the future.
The campus has expanded its programs base and is now a host to various courses including Commerce, Business Information Technology, Purchasing & Supplies, and Electrical& Civil Engineering. The campus also offers certificate courses in Purchasing and Supplies, Mathematics among others. Postgraduate courses are also available. The steadfast growth of the campus is attributed to the combined staff marketing approach, which works tirelessly to entice clients. The campus has also developed unique mode of study to cater for the needs of the working class. We opened our doors with only 65 students, many applicants at the time left, because they did not believe. The campus’s student population now stands at over 1500 and to facilitate delivery of the diverse programmes, the campus has 150 full time and part- time lecturers. The administration wing has a staff establishment of about 20. Every staff member understands why he or she is here and that makes my directorial work even easier. As a way of extending and inculcating JKUAT organizational culture, most of the lecturers teaching in the campus are sourced from the various departments at the Juja Campus.
The last three years, has seen 30 masters and 23 diploma students graduating in various disciplines within the stipulated university academic calendar. The first group of undergraduate students is due for graduation this year. I must thank this group of students since they are the real pioneers of the campus. After three years as Director of Nakuru Campus, I strongly believe that the campus has a great future. All we need to do is maintain good hospitality and be very careful not to take our customers for granted. We must continue offering the services they expect and not compromise with quality in whichever way. With customers, comes the responsibility, loyalty and continuous quality assurance. One of the challenges I have set for all my members of staff has been “what can you think of today in regards to improvement that will make us better than yesterday.” With this type of culture, staff members know my expectations in terms of meeting their targets.
My major challenge at the campus has been some key learning infrastructure. I sometimes get sleepless nights when am told evening class did not take place fully because there was a black out in the campus. There are other tough management decisions to be made, but support systems such as the Senate, Council and the JKUAT management play a huge role in ensuring success.
Lastly, I wish to thank all the stakeholders, who have in one way or the other contributed to make us be where we are now. It is my sincere hope that we shall continue to partner in this important endeavor. I welcome all of you to visit our campus situated at Kwanza House. Today however, despite several infrastructural challenges, students can enjoy several facilities such as Internet, Library e-resources, 150 seater Library backed by collaboration with Kenya National Library services (KNLS) and quality Computer Labs. Indeed the Campus is about to unveil a number of innovative programs in the 3rd year anniversary. Welcome to enroll for a course of your choice.
