Women Techmakers Mombasa

GDG Women Mombasa was honored to host an event named “Women Tech makers: Mombasa” under the theme “Engineering the future” The event was proudly facilitated in conjunction with the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, one of the only tertiary institutions in Mombasa that celebrated this auspicious day the women techmakers style.

The event kicked off with a welcome address by Alifiyah Ganijee after the which Andrew Mwangi the Master of Ceremony officially welcomed attendants and briefly led them through the event programme and thereafter welcomed Joan Nabusoba who delivered a lightning talk on Android Apps Development giving an overview of benefits of developing on Android, how to begin, resources to dig in and much more.

After the short break, the event resumed with a female panel discussion on the topic “A day in the life of a woman techmaker and Entrepreneur”, the  specially invited panelists, Madam Mary Kerich and Madam Amina Bameda, both lecturers at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, a professional in Public Health and an IT Professional respectively, they really blew the crowd off with the energy and enthusiasm.

The panelists described their typical days and the path to their career journey after which a few questions like “How are women shaping the future of technology culture and innovation?” , “What are the key elements of success?”, “What do we need to change through mentoring, education and support?”, “What wisdom would you give a daughter or a female employee?”, “Why aren’t there more women in technology leadership roles?” were discussed.

After the scrumptious meal the event  resumed with a session on Android Apps Demo.After the Demo ,Alifiyah Ganijee presented a Leadership session .The brief talk was followed by a TED Talk video by Sheryl Sandberg on Why we have too few women leaders.It was a very inspiring video.Later on Madam Kerich gave a speech on behalf of the Director, JKUAT Mombasa Campus, how thoughtful and kind was that of , Mr. Fred Mugambi, we really appreciated your message.

The leadership session was followed by another game yet called “One big happy family” by Zahra Jalalkhan.The event concluded with closing remarks by Alifiyah Ganijee, a vote of thanks by Andrew Mwangi and a photo session of the “One big happy family” 🙂
