Ph.D Courses

We have two doctoral programmes by research and thesis:

  1. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN URBAN DESIGN
  2. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN URBAN PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN URBAN DESIGN

The aim of this programme is to produce qualified researchers, innovators, educators and consultants in the specialized fields of Sustainable Urban Design. This is achieved through the accomplishment of independent and original research work, the reporting of the research results in a thesis and a subsequent oral defence. The specific objectives are:

  1. Define and analyse contemporary urban design problems
  2. Develop vital sustainable urban design concepts, programs, policies and plans through research and enhanced knowledge in the field of urban design in innovative ways
  • Develop skills and attain fundamental understanding urban analysis
  1. Develop managerial and transformational leadership skills in sustainable urban design.
  2. Enhance the knowledge and design skills in Sustainable Urban Development through highly specialized advanced training.
  3. Provide innovative and entrepreneurial skills for development of home-grown solutions to sustainable urban design problems relating to housing, crime, street design, open spaces, heritage conservation, ecological conservation, urban design theory and practice and urban aesthetics among other emerging trends.

Learning Outcomes

The students from this programme should be able to:

  1. Independently diagnose urban design problem and prepare proposals that enhance urban sustainability.
  2. Analyse and come up with solutions to advance sustainability with emphasis on the physical form of cities.
  • Effectively contribute to and disseminate knowledge in urban design.
  1. Independently evaluate and assess other researchers’ activities and any other works requiring a high degree of academic expertise and scientific competence.
  2. Develop successful strategies for the implementation of urban development initiatives
  3. Develop vital and sustainable urban design theories and concepts.

    Admission Requirements

    The following shall be eligible for admission into the Ph.D. programme in Urban Design:

    1. A holder of a Master of Sustainable Urban Development, of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
    2. A holder of a Master degree in any other related field from any other institution, which is recognized by the university senate as being of equivalent academic status.
    1. A candidate must submit a research concept approved by the Centre/ SABS to be eligible for admission.

    Upon admission, a candidate is required to develop a full proposal within six (6) months for registration

    2.DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN URBAN PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT

    Objectives of the programme
    The aim of this programme is to produce qualified researchers, innovators, educators and consultants in the specialized fields of sustainable urban planning and development. This is achieved through the accomplishment of independent and original research work, the reporting of the research results in a thesis and a subsequent oral defence. The specific objectives are:
    • Develop theory in urban planning with emphasis on the role of the devolved government in sustainable urbanisation.
    • Identify and critic contemporary urban planning issues related to social justice, citizen participation and resolving conflict in planning
    1. Document and analyse the peculiarities of urbanisation trends in contemporary urban settings
    2. Develop managerial and transformational leadership skills in urban governance.
    3. Enhance the knowledge and design skills in sustainable Urban planning and Development through highly specialized advanced training.
    • Provide innovative and entrepreneurial skills for development of home-grown solutions to urban problems.
    • Develop theory in urban ecological planning, housing, climate change and urban structure, infrastructure development, land use planning, history of planning, urban economics, pollution, densification and solid waste management among others.

    Learning Outcomes

    The students from this programme should be able to:

    • Carry out original research and present their findings in scientific conferences and publish in scholarly journals.
    • Analyse and come up with solutions to advance sustainability with emphasis on policy that shapes urban development and spatial management.
    1. Effectively contribute to and disseminate knowledge in the specified field.
    2. Show a high level of scientific competence and understanding of the subject, and display originality of thought.
    3. Independently evaluate and assess other researchers’ activities and any other works requiring a high degree of academic expertise and scientific competence.
    • Develop theories of and in planning.
