The JKUAT Alumni have nominated three candidates for the position of the University Chancellor. Members of the Alumni who thronged JKUAT Nairobi CBD Campus approved the names of three reputable and professional statesmen through a nomination exercise where the Alumni voted on the five names that were shortlisted by the University senate. Following the exercise, the three names will be forwarded to the Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology for onward transmission to the Head of State who will appoint one to head the titular arm of the University.

The three Nominated Candidates are:

1. DR. S.K. Macharia

2. DR. James Mwangi

3. Prof. Calistous Juma

The Alumni were participating for the first time in the appointment of University Chancellor in line with new demands of the University Act 2012. Article 38 (Schedule 2) of the act which states that “the names of the five applicants deemed by the senate to be the most suitable for ranking as Chancellor shall be circulated among the alumni of the public university, who shall be requested to rank the applicants in order of preference”

This is a break from the past where appointment of the Chancellor was an exclusive preserve of the president.

The event was held on Saturday, 16th February, 2013 at JKUAT Nairobi CBD Campus. It was attended by among others, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mabel Imbuga, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, the Director, Alumni & International students Office, Prof. Wariara Kariuki, the current A.g Director, Alumni & International Students Office, Dr. Justus Onguso, the Academic Registrar Dr. Suleiman Okech, the JKUAT Alumni Association Chairman, Arch. Christopher Naicca, the former JKUAT Alumni Association Chairman, Mr. Paul Mbole, the JKUAT Alumni Association Secretary, Mr. Saoke Churchill, the Secretary Corporate Communications officer, Dr. Mike Ngonyo, Deputy Registrar Admissions Mr. Anthony Kiswi and the Legal Officer, Ms. Vivian Nyambura.
