School of Architecture and Building Sciences (SABS)

The school was established in February 2000. It brings together disciplines related to the building environment in an attempt to address the commonly experienced problems in the construction environment.
The school is staffed with experts in the different disciplines of the built environment. Apart from teaching, majorities are also active in the practice. This is of importance in that apart from getting some of the students to be directly involved in these, the lecturers are able to bring to class unmatched knowledge from experience.
Staff from the school are also active both in local and international discourses. They have had the opportunity to publish their research findings both in local as well as international academic journals.

Emphasis is on teaching practical with theoretical inputs. It is mandatory that during the long vacation a student should be attached to a professional office for a minimum period of eight (8) months. Their performance in this exercise is confirmed by a member of staff who must visit each student at his station. The visiting supervisor should hold lengthy discussions with the student workplace supervisor. Only students who are on their first and last year of study are exempted from practical attachments. Other notable issues/subjects that are included in our syllabus are a unit on HIV-AIDS and one on Entrepreneurship. The school believes in graduating a full-person.
Our graduates are in demand both locally and also internationally. Others have successfully started their own practice.

The schools programmes are well grounded. To graduate from any of the programmes in the school, each candidate is required to successfully handle a graduating project. Graduates are competent and readily find opportunities in the market.
