Initial programmes under the faculty were started in 1994 though the faculty was inaugurated in the 1989/90 academic year to champion teaching and research in the pure sciences whose results find ready application in the applied sciences. It is the fastest growing faculty, which pioneered the introduction of the Alternative Degree Programmes (ADP) including the pre-university bridging courses that have now become very popular to Kenyan youths seeking university entrance. A number of innovations have been developed in the faculty.
